Screwdriver

The Screwdriver cocktail is a timeless classic known for its simplicity and refreshing taste. Originating in the mid-20th century, its origins are unclear, but it's believed to have gained popularity among American oil workers in the Persian Gulf who stirred the drink with screwdrivers, hence the name. Today, it's a popular choice for brunches, casual gatherings, and warm summer days.

Mixoloco - Mixology Tips:

  • Quality Vodka Matters: Opt for a high-quality vodka to enhance the flavor of your Screwdriver cocktail. Personally, I've found that a smooth, premium vodka complements the citrusy notes of the orange juice exceptionally well, resulting in a more enjoyable drinking experience.

  • Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice: While store-bought orange juice is convenient, nothing beats the taste of freshly squeezed juice. Investing a few extra minutes to squeeze your own oranges will elevate the flavor of your Screwdriver and give it a bright, vibrant taste that you won't find in bottled juices.

  • Proper Ice Control: Ice plays a crucial role in the texture and temperature of your Screwdriver. I recommend using large, dense ice cubes to minimize dilution while keeping your drink cold. Additionally, consider using an insulated highball glass to maintain the chill for longer periods, especially on hot days.

  • Experiment with Citrus Varieties: Don't limit yourself to just one type of orange juice. Experiment with different citrus varieties like blood oranges or tangerines to add depth and complexity to your Screwdriver. Each variety offers its own unique flavor profile, allowing you to tailor the cocktail to your taste preferences.

  • Mixoloco's Note: One of my favorite variations of the Screwdriver is to add a splash of soda water or sparkling water for a bit of effervescence. It adds a subtle fizziness that livens up the drink, making it even more refreshing, especially during summertime gatherings.
